Open house at Parks & Wildlife

Bernie Dizon will conduct an open house on Wednesday, January 24, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the PAWB-Dizon fruit botanic garden at Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Nature Center along North Avenue, Quezon City.

He will be showing his durian trees growing on adobe soil which are once again bearing flowers. His trees show that the exotic durian tree will grow well and fruit well in places like Metro Manila. The trees he planted in 1992 have been fruiting in the last three years.

Aside from discussing the culture of durian, he will also demonstrate modern propagation techniques such as crown grafting, inarching and making double-rootstocks planting materials which grow faster and are more productive.

Visitors will also be able to see for themselves grafted planting materials of outstanding varieties of fruit trees. These include Millennium mango, Guimaras mango (superior carabao variety), longkong (the first class lanzones from Thailand), duku lanzones, grafted mangosteen, longan, lychee, latexless jackfruit, durian, rambutan, and others. These will be available for sale to those who would like to plant them in their farms or gardens. Also to be available are planting materials of the Paniyur variety of black pepper from India which produces long fruit spikes. The yield is more than double that of the ordinary variety. This black pepper will bear fruit in just one-and-a-half years.
