Free lecture on growing fruits tomorrow at Parks & Wildlife

Edited by Zac B. Sarian

If you are interested in planting exotic fruits, whether it is in your home garden or in your farm, better attend the free lecture and demonstration by Bernie Dizon tomorrow, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Ninoy Aquino Parks & Wildlife along North Avenue in Quezon City.

Here, he will discuss techniques in planting such fruit trees as rambutan, Magallanes pummelo, Guimaras mango, longkong, mangosteen, lychee, durian, apple makopa and others.

He will also show what he did at Parks & Wildlife where his exotic fruits have been producing fruits regularly. One lanzones tree which produced sweet fruits only last June is now flowering again.

He will discuss how to detect inferior planting materials of fruit trees. Some unscrupulous sellers Dizon said, pass off seedlings as grafted materials. This is bad, especially for rambutan, lychee and longan because majority of plants grown from seeds of these species turn out to be males, hence they will not bear fruit. If the plants turn out to be female, the will fruit only after so many years.

Grafted planting materials of durian, rambutan, longkong, duku lanzones, Magallanes pummelo, berba, apple makopa, Guimaras mango, Millennium mango and others will be available during the open house.
