Believed to be an aphrodisiac fruit, this became
the Chinese's favorite. Like lychee, longan seeds also produce 70% male
that will never bear fruits. In the Bernie Dizon's hometown in Bongabon,
N.E., a Taiwanese company established a plantation of lychee and longan
with the purpose of exporting the fruits to Taiwan.
But they found out
that Manila is more lucrative marker for longan and lychee fruits

so what
we are buying now are locally grown imported lychee and longan. The secret

GRAFTED THAI
LONGAN |
| |
|
One of best-selling fruit tree at the Magallanes Weekend Market is the
grafted Thai Longan variety propagated by Bernie Dizon. This has small
seeds and has been fruiting in the Philippines. Also a hot seller is the
grafted mangosteen which can also be grown in Luzon. This fruit tree will
do best under partial shade, such as under coconuts and other trees.
Grafted mangosteen are very low growing. Even those two feet tall are
already fruiting. The Magallanes Weekend Market is open every Saturday and
Sunday. It is located at the corner of Edsa and South Luzon Expressway, at
the parking area of the former Magallanes Theater |
