Floriferous Lychee

Section Editor by Zac B. Sarian

FLORIFEROUS LYCHEE. Photo shows one of the three lychee varieties that bear fruits under Philippine conditions. This is the variety introduced into the country by the late Dr. Dioscoro Umali of Los Baņos and which Bernie Dizon is now propagating. Most of the fruits of this variety are seedless while some have very small seeds. This variety has been fruiting for some years now at the Central Luzon State University, at the Quezon City home of Dr. Paula Umali, and at the Tiaong (Quezon) farm of Atty. Victor Lazatin. Another variety that also fruits well under local conditions produces red fruits. It has broad, rounded leaves in contrast to the narrow elongated leaves of the variety introduced by Dr. Umali.
