ADVANTAGE OF  DOUBLE ROOTSTOCK

 CARABAO MANGO
Superior Carabao mango has a distinct aromatic flavor with excellent eating quality (sweet and juicy). However, there are many strains of Carabao mango and while some of them are really superior in quality, there are several others that are not really that good.

 Sweet Elena
Sweet Elena as the best carabao mango strain for commercialization. It has an average fruit weight of 365-700 grams and sugar content of almost 19 percent Brix.

The claim of several business enterprises and research institutions that grafted Sweet Elena  (Mangifera Indica) seedlings are available from them.   Is not true, according to pomologist Bernie Dizon. Dizon operates a botanic fruit garden at the Ninoy Wildlife parks, Diliman, Quezon City, where he is topworking some 1,000 Sweet Elena seedlings with other superior strains for pest-and-disease-free seedlings with superior fruiting quality.

Sweet Elena owner Nida Malabed, said she had designated only Bernie Dizon as the exclusive propagator and distributor in Metro Manila of grafted Sweet Elena seedlings aside from the family nursery in Sabang, Sta. Cruz, Zambales.

Regarding Proliferation and sale of grafted Sweet Elena Mango seedlings

These outstanding Carabao mangoes could be propagated or multiplied for planting in different parts of the country. Through grafting, any variety of mangoes could be used as rootstock and scion coming from outstanding varieties approved by NSIC. Always plant double rootstock because they are more resistant to typhoon, fast growing and early fruiting.

  Guimaras Mango

The four outstanding Guimaras mangoes are now known as GES - 73, GES - 77, GES - 84 and GES - 85, stands for Guimaras Experimental Station.

There are two other outstanding mango selections that have been made by the Mango Research and Development Center in Guimaras. These are the Fresco and Talaban selections

Double or triple rootstock make the mango prolific, overcome biennial fruiting and counter the side effects of potassium nitrate. It is not true that a grafted Carabao mango has short lifespan as claimed by mango pseudo-experts, which appeared in some video interview, newspapers and seminars.

At the Central Luzon State University, hundred of century old mango (both grafted and not grafted) planted side by side at the University avenues are all fruiting well and no mortality has been experienced.

A grafted mango has broad base while mango grown from seeds do not have a broad base; and the diameter of its trunk from the base to the middle is the same.

CENTURY OLD GRAFTED CARABAO MANGO AT CLSU

Excessive spraying of potassium nitrate is the cause of a mango tree's short lifespan - not grafting. Even if grown from seedlings, the tree would still die due to abuse. Bernie Dizon observed this when he collected scions throughout the country way back in the 90's for planting in a 3000 hectares of mango plantation.

 IMPORTED MANGOES

 Chokanan (Chooke Anan)

The most popular varieties grown in Thailand and Malaysia for local and export market. It is one of the sweetest mangoes in the world and its average weight is 0.5 kilo per fruit. A ripe fruit of this variety is referred to as Mangga Madu or Honey mango because of its almost similar taste of honey. Green-mango fanciers also favor this variety because it does not taste too sour like our Carabao mango. Because of its thick skin, it does not spoil easily and it is resistant to pests and diseases.

 Eating Green
Also known as the Kaesaway variety, this is the pride of Thailand. This is very sweet and even when green. Its fruit weighs an average of 1 kilo per fruit. Under local conditions, it is a fast growing tree.

 Golden Queen

Taiwan's best mango, with its fruit weighing 1.2 to 1.4 kilo per fruit. This cultivar bears fruit voluntarily. In the farm of Mr. Eulogio Mallari, it bears fruit continuously during dry season with three sets of fruits - flower, egg size and 1-kilo fruit.
